This is footage I took on Tuesday the the 17th of April 2007 at Halibut Point State park in Gloucester Massachusetts.

http://www.halibutpointstatepark.org/vtour.html

Some of these waves are 15 or 20 feet
Pretty decent surf.
Sustained winds were over 30 knots with gusts much higher.

I miscalculated the reach of one wave toward the end of the video, thus the expletive!

Nor'easter: Here's is layman's attempt at a Nor'easter definition.
A Nor'easter Similar to a hurricane a nor'easter is a counter-clock wise turning cyclone (a storm system circulating around a center). Nor'easters are spawned by a very curvy Jet Stream that dips far south allowing cold arctic air to meet warm air. The warm air rises over the cold, creating instability up high and an area of low pressure below. Larger temperature differences create greater turbulence. Once the system is formed, the earths rotation causes the air to circle around the center (Like when you drain the water out of a sink). This creates the northeast wind, hence it's name nor'easter.

The blizzard of 1978 that pummeled the east coast was the result of a Nor'easter

  • Halibut Point is in Rockport.

  • I remember this day! I was at the harbor entrance to Gloucester working for the Coast Guard. I had never seen surf over Round Rock shoal in my four years stationed there, but on this morning there was whitewater everywhere. Great video.
