Paris was the home of Arthur Rubinstein for many years of his life. So it is not surprising that he knew and played the music of Debussy, Ravel and Poulenc all of with whom he had a personal acquaintance. His acquaintanceship with French composers dates back to Saint Saens who heard Rubinstein, who was then only in his early teens, rehearse the composers G minor Piano Concerto. Rubinstein writes, "We went to greet the maestro, who lisped shortly: 'That was very good,' got up and left without shaking our hands."
It must be remembered that when Rubinstein first began playing the music of the French Impressionists, such music did not fall easily upon the ears of contemporary audiences. Rubinstein was booed in 1904 when he played a composition of Debussy in Warsaw. This Intermezzo is one of the most charming compositions that Poulenc ever composed. It is dedicated to Arthur Rubinstein. The music and the artist fit together perfectly. I cannot imagine a more beautiful performance,

  • Yes a truly special performance - not much needs to be said about this except that someone once said of Rubinstein that he was the last civilized man. One sees why after such evocative playing...... I seem to remember that he once played as an encore a 'modern" piece he had played during his concert because he did not think the audience appreciated it enough! As most would know he was mentor to many young musicians throughout his long life.

  • What a pleasure, I had the LP "A French Programme" many years ago and have not heard it since. Indeed, the most beautiful performance imaginable;

  • This piece sound like Chopin + Liszt !

  • This is one of the most cherished pieces in my repertoire. It was inspired by this very recording. Such a little-known piece of music. My favorite pianist, one of my favorite composers...

    It is indeed Rubinstein re-incarnated. His recording will always be untouchable.

  • Bravo!
