I have two problems with this particular recording. The first lies in the fact that his later recordings took a much more thoughtful approach; he treated the music not as an exercise (as it was meant to be) but as a viable piece of music to be performed, rendering this particular approach, while technically unarguable, somewhat lacking in musicality. The second lies in the fact that there is a selective representation of the music, like chopping chapters from a book and calling it finished.

@XforeverdrowningX Gould also performed it slowly on his late recordings, but certainly not romantic in any way.
I prefer '81 recording, much fuller and more peaceful.

check out Ralph Kirkpatrick's version on harpsichord ... amazingly good.

this is the only version of the aria i like. the others were played much too slowly and way too romantic. Gould is a genius!
