Yeah I love all my 5.56's...They have killed everything I have shot at....The only thing I do differently for hogs is put 2 or 3 green tips and it's obviously clean pass throughs....Nothing run far when its lung is full of blood and trauma
@TacticalSuperRebel I guess its the same reason you would get any other minority caliber. Preference. Plus lightweight and semi-auto.I think it's reliable because .50 is easy to find bullets for reloading and it has a straight case design that makes reloading quick. My 5.56 won't knock a hog off its feet at 100 yards, but the beowulf will. I dont think the 5.56 is inadequate in any way. I carry a 5.56 everday and swear by it. I just enjoy the hell out of the .50 variant. .80 cal is just nuts.
Yea, I know about the .450 and .458, and they, too don't really have a purpose If someone made an .80 caliber conversion I think there would still be fans, too many people have the philosophy of bigger is better, without even thinking about why, and you only have a Beowulf for hug hunting? Why not use the 5.56? Unless your hunting african game or bear, the 5.56/.223 can take almost anything, and if you believe the 5.56 is inaduquate, get a .300 or .338 Win Mag, not the little Beowulf!!
I agree with the use of the shotgun but An upper receiver weighs less, so does the brass over the shells. The decision could have been made from that, not too sure. There are a couple of other big bore calibers like the .458 socom and .450 bushmaster that are popular too. I like the Beowulf because its easy to reload and good for my purpose: hunting hogs.
Well still the ability to open doors more efficiently doesn't justify a different upper and loss of long and medium range accuracy, and nothing beats te good ol 12 gauge if its extreme close range, and there are door breaching rounds made just for that in shotguns... the .50 Beowulf is a useless pathetic answer to a problem that doesn't exist! now the 6.5 Grendel is impressive and I could see it being fielded, but no the shitty 6.8 SPC and .50 Beowulf get fielded... WTF? I'd rather have 5.56
yes, a shotgun w/ slug would work, but you're sacrificing the versatility of the m4 then. Remember, .50 beowulf rounds feed into a standard ar-15 magazine. You dont have to carry 2 rifles. Also, the .50 beowulf averages 1800 fps, so I wouldnt call it a slow round.
@TacticalSuperRebel its not about 1 round going through, its about creating enough energy per surface area to destroy the whole bolt to the door and/or hinge. A lead core 5.56 round will go through 3/8" steel. I shoot through 1/4" plate all the time with the .223. The beowulf will not go through 1/4", but it puts an incredible size dent in it. What they are going for is a high energy round in an m4 platform and beign able to use it out to 100m accurately.
HAHAHA anything that stops the .223 will stop a .50 Beowulf much easier! the only door I could think of that the .223 might not penetrate on the first shot would be a 1/2 inch steel or concrete door, and there aren't any concrete doors that I know of, and 1/2 inch of steel will stop a big slow pistol-like round (Beowulf) easier than a fast little round, and if the door is 3/8 inch steel the .223 will go through most of the time, the .50 Beowulf.... DOUBT IT!!!!
