John Michaud, III and the building he wishes would survive. (Note: Some material here lifted from North County Public Radio web-page.)

Remember the classic 1980s horror flick, Nightmare on Elm Street, with Freddy Kreuger, the guy with razor claws haunting teenagers' dreams?

Legend has it that the film and its title was inspired by a student film that director Wes Craven made at a former fraternity house on Elm Street in Potsdam. Craven taught at Clarkson University in Potsdam for several years in the 1960s.

On his website, Craven denies the connection. Still, it remains part of local lore. It's even mentioned on the village's website. A Facebook-based movement to preserve the building won almost 8,000 fans.

But the so-called "Nightmare on Elm Street House" was in disrepair and had been condemned. Today it's being torn down. Local historian John Michaud led the effort to preserve the building. He met David Sommerstein outside the Nightmare on Elm Street House.

And my take on the situation here http://quantumdriven.livejournal.com/18207.html
Oh hell I'll just post it right here, lol
It's true.
Well, a grand old house got demolished unnecessarily, anyway.

Film director Wes Cravens states it had nothing to do with the genesis of his
film, even though he DID do an amateur film there back in the 60s when he
taught at Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY. Now isn't that strange of Wes
Cravens to EVEN bother to deny it?

I steadfastly maintain that back when Wes Cravens was a lowly paid teacher in the 60s (and
probably just a Grad Assistant at that), he was denied the intimate charms of
Clarkson and Potsdam township females; perhaps didn't get his testicles milked one
little bit. And so he is a testy sore sport now.

Anyway, Wes didn't step in to save it, and rumors are flying about corruption involved
insofar as just where the City funds came from to demolish it, and just why hadn't it
been posted as a tax delinquent structure.
Conclusion: Officials in Potsdam, NY used Public monies to level a house as a favor to
one of their own that wanted the lot. Or else they owed somebody a favor for a previous
low bid on a City project.

It's a done deal now according to a Tweet on Twitter by John Daniel Michaud, III

  • that sux, it should be like a land mark

  • @FatGuyWithAKatana Corruption is involved. Some wealthy tightwad that's politically important wanted that lot but was too cheap to buy it and pay for the demo them self.

The place was tax delinquent but the City kept it a secret so they could sneak this demo in and hand the lot over to some a-hole butt-buddy.

National Media stayed away because Wes Craven said he would sue if mentioned. What Wes Craven's problem is nobody knows. Perhaps Alzheimer setting in, lol?
