the titans, ravens and jets still use the 46...its used sparingly cause it mostly works against I forms...most teams oinly use the I form in certain situations...and teams have to gave a great front to use 46 effectively...titans use a variation called the 4-4...rex ryan says he uses the 46 20% of the time...u also have to have excellent corners..

@rodney2652 well...negative yards...ok the pat were lucky to be in the SB. im 40 yrs old so i remember the stats. the eagles D-FENS have been doing great with the 46 D-FENS longer then the bears, about 11 years and still going. PS im not a eagles fan. if the eagles O-FENS had put up numbers.....the eagles cooked had won 4 SB's ez
@holywar911 Yes it has worked for the Eagles but not like it did with the Bears of '85. You can't even place them in the same ballpark. Do you remember the half time stats of Superbowl 20? The Patriots had NEGATIVE yards rushing, negative yards passing, and negative total yards against the Bears defense. The Eagles never even came close to those stats in any game.
I don't think the 46 would work today. They'd get pulled apart by the quick, short yardage throws. I guess it's a bit like comparing boxers from different era's, you can only judge something by how good it was at the time. It's a joy to watch these old games, love watching 70's and 80's matches, less polished and not so robotic as nowadays.
That's why the Bears struggled against the 49ers at this time. I believe they got beaten 41-0 this season and again 28-3 in the '88 NFC championship game.
Simms was sacked 8 times. The 46 defense would work today but you also need great players to pull it off. In 1985 the bears defense had 9 all pro players- much better than the bears defensive players today.
the idea behind the west coast offense was to negate pressure by getting the ball out so quickly that it don't matter if you have a pass rusher free. That was the idea of the 3 and 5 step drops, throwing to a spot rather than waiting for a receiver to uncover, working only half the field so reads are quicker, etc. I don't know, but I think once the west coast proliferated the league it would have been difficult for the 46 to succeed as a base defense. Of course this isn't 46, it left with ryan
the 05-06 bears used it when ron rivera was d-cord...but steve smith killed it in the 05 playoff game...
