Yeah. Verizon wants to spin it off and merge it with FairPoint Communications. A lot of people are very opposed to this though.

Actually, New England Telephone is making a slight comeback, Verizon's spinning it off and it will be merged with some holding company, of course it's ME, NH and VT operations only.

Not really. Verizon didn't come about until 2001. Verizon was the result of a merge between GTE and Bell Atlantic, which had previously (in 1997) merged with NYNEX, which was a combination of New England Telephone and New York Telephone (notice the acronym).
