Here, a video of my recent re-constructed project of a spindle motor of a hard disk.
I've put the complete casing of the hard drive because the motor doesn't spin up if the heads are disconnected from the logic board.

  • Cool.

Tried it myself but the motor spins down after some time even with the platter removed. how do I make it run continously.Dont have datasheet of the HA13627 spindle drive chip

  • My motor doesnt run continously, it spins down after 2 min. I think that to make this motor run continusly i'll need to build a controller but i dont have too much time to get involved in that project XD

  • Why did you do that? Was it broken?

  • Yes, the heads get damaged and the drive doesnt boot anything.

See de other video to watch the crazy heads.

The type of motor used in a hard drive is called a stepper motor. You simply need to locate a stepper motor controller. They are available in kit format on ebay.

  • Notace Hard Drive clicking?

  • Lesson: Seagate sucks

  • I would like to know how this cuts off hands, any1 knows?

  • @mashersmasher If you try to short pins on your ide port, you will blow your ide bus. The reason why it stops is because when the drive is turned on, the controller is doing a self check on the drive and when it doesn't read anything, since you removed the disc it will stop after a specified time out.

  • sux, nothing happend

  • @yanniblueman

It does that because that's what it does naturally. I think you should be able to short some pins on the ide connection to make it spin continuously. It might be worth looking into the ide interface to try and figure something out but i'd guess that you'd have to short out whatever pins tell the drive that it is being read.

  • I have removed the motor from the casing, disconnected (ripped) everything off that wasn't power or motor connection. it runs fine and does not spin down, I use it as a gyro.

  • how can i take out motor safely i try but the motor is not good condition
