This is a prototype for an interactive kinetic sculpture inspired by the concept of an Isobar.
Isobar are used to read the weather. Each isobar represents a line of equal atmospheric point of pressure measured at sea level. The distribution of isobars determines the magnitude and the direction of the wind. Wind is nothing but air moving from a high point of pressure to a low point of pressure and its power is determinate by the distance between the 2 points.
This sculpture is a three-dimensional representation of an isobar.
Like an isobar it expand and contracts based on it barometric value using complex system of pulleys. This prototype is made of a system of 8 pulleys which effecting each other shape allowing the all structure to morph organically. The shape of the Isobar is controlled by 2 key point (one in the outside and one in the inside) allowing the sculpture to easily contract and expand.
This all system is connected to a motor, which is connected to a digital interface reading live barometric data through the internet. The sculpture then changes shape accordingly
The movement of air, like the water current of the ocean is Planet Earth circulatory system.
The intent of this project is to create a poetic three-directional representation of this law of physics allowing the audience to understand in a more emotional and intuitive way.
Using multiple combination of pulley system is also possible to crate a full three-dimensional representation of a meteorological map.
