In turn-of-the-century Sweden, cancer-stricken, dying Agnes is visited in her isolated rural mansion by her sisters Karin and Maria. As Agnes' condition deteriorates and pain management becomes increasingly more difficult, fear and revulsion grip the sisters, who seem incapable of empathy, and Agnes' only comfort and solace comes from her maid Anna. As the end draws closer, long repressed feelings of grudging resentment and mistrust cause jealousy, selfishness, and bitterness between the siblings to surface.

@HLDG I disagree. I actually think that "Cries and Whispers" is superior to those films that you stated were his best. I found all three overrated and dull. To each their own. "Cries and Whispers" is a masterpiece.

Not a fan of this film so far and don't expect to be by the ending. The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, and Winter Light are his best. The Magician is one of my personal favorites. But I haven't seen Shame, Scenes from a Marriage, or Fanny and Alexander yet.

This and "Fanny and Alexander " are Bergman's best films. The direction, performances and photography were ace. A masterpiece.
