Just like @Azzkik411 says, it's a sick wave when the swell is right. It's for sure surfable with a 20-30ft swell, just with a really short board you don't care about...but the playing around, a la body boarding/body surfing/skimboarding is SOOO much fun on those hollow huge days. Yes, there was a guy eaten here in the 1930's, yes there is a nude beach up the way full of guys, yes the rips are pretty nuts on any tide swing, but it's all worth it for some heavy, giddy sponge barrels.
@Talis64 I have bodyboarded there, but I like shorebreaks like that. Going a little further north, there is a section that peels a bit especially when its not as choppy as this day. Maybe "stick" able but would have to be a gutsy stand up surfer.
@Azzkik411 I am from Hawaii and really like those powerful closeout shorebreak type waves. Bodyboard/bodysurf for life. Lived in SF for 5 years. Although it takes a big swell (OB will be over twice as big) I loved sponging there. it was a real, hollow ass powerful pit, which to me was hard to find in Cali.
I have never seen waves that big at "Dudes jerkin it beach," although they look all bark and no bite. That huge closeout at the beginning just dies instantly.

One of the few fatal great white attacks of NorCal happened at this beach. I think it was back in the 70's...

Baker Beach is nice to walk around on the beach & look at the views but way too
close-out crunch & cold for me even when I was a semi-crazy kid.
Think I'd rather punch my self in the face
than paddle out into that.
