A quick introduction to some logical puzzles. Robin Wilson, Gresham Professor of Geometry, runs through some sample problems, from Epimenides to Lewis Carroll.

This is the twelth part of 'A Millennium of Mathematical Puzzles'.
The full lecture is available (in 24 parts) here on YouTube, or it can be downloaded (like all of our lectures) in its complete form from the Gresham College website, in video, audio or text formats:
http://www.gresham.ac.uk

Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. This tradition continues today with all of our five or so public lectures a week being made available for free download from our website.

  • This is why i love Alice in Wonderland. And in turn Lewis Carroll.

  • @kdmq Yes, but as q implies p, if not q, then not p as well.

Essentially, q cannot exist without p and vice versa so (not q and p) is the same as (not p and not q)

  • The statement in the text says "...Or it's impossible that both Pablo Picasso did not paint potted palms and that Pamela Potter's porridge is putrid. That seems to state NOT(NOT Q AND P) You expressed it as NOT(NOT Q AND NOT P). Isn't that a logic mess up?
