Spears "embarrassed" by VMA performance

Singer Britney Spears says she's embarrassed by her performance on MTV's Video Music Awards Sunday night. She added that she was quote "just plain nervous." Spears continues to be criticized for that opening act. Spears lip-synched through her latest single, "Gimme More," and didn't move much. In the past, Spears has delivered memorable performances on the VMAs, dancing with a snake and making out with Madonna.

Meanwhile, Kid Rock is required to make a court appearance in a few weeks after he reportedly punched Tommy Lee at the VMAs. Pamela Anderson has been married to both rockers who have feuded in the past. It was unclear how the fight started, but security guards were quick to respond. Kid Rock was issued a citation for misdemeanor battery.

And Justin Timberlake is giving props to singer Chris Brown after his energetic dancing on the VMAs. Among many routines, Brown did a rendition of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" performance. When Timberlake walked on stage to accept an award, he said he was happy that there was a new generation of musicians carrying the torch. He also added that Brown made him feel old!

Actor Kirk Douglas is promoting his new book, "Let's Face it: 90 Years of Living, Loving and Learning." He greeted fans at Border's Books in New York yesterday before signing copies. This is Douglas' fourth book, which describes his love for his wife, children, grandchildren and two dogs. The 90-year-old has appeared in 70 films and has been nominated for an Academy Award three times.

Comic actress Sherri Shepard has officially taken over as a panelist on ABC's "The View." She earned a standing ovation as she took the stage yesterday. Shepard joins new moderator Whoopi Goldberg for the show's 11 season.
