This band has a talent for singing songs in music videos that I would never imagine being related. This one is excellent... the edits were ridiculously smooth. (:
I originally thought the song was about a kid in college for the first time, missing their parent.
Only reason I would think otherwise is the second line "...I felt free, and I felt lonely...", which I couldn't imagine saying I "felt free" from someone dying. But maybe it was a slow process??? Interesting idea
That's actually one of the lines that specifically makes me lean towards my 'married people' theory. Consider this, when you marry a person essentially you're 'tying' yourself to that one person for the rest of your life. When one partner dies, especially after you've been together for a long time, you're free. You're free to date other people, you're have the habits that drove them crazy, ect. It may not be a freedom you want, but it is a freedom you have now.
I thought it was kind of obviously about a couple that have just split and how the man is taking being alone. Unlike the majority of mountain goats songs, i thought this was one of the easiest to decypher.
Oh my god... this made me cry so hard just now. It's so real. Exactly how I felt when my wife left me a year ago for my best friend, who was the best man at my wedding. ::cry::
