My BC, Jack, was 9yrs old when we taught him to roll over...just to see if he would - it took no more than about 3 minutes!!!! One month later we were telling friends about it...we then told Jack to roll over and he did it straight away - maybe he remember the silly handgun action we used but still that's pretty darn smart. He's a very swithced on dog!!!

As long as you give it something fun to do while you're home (agility and flyball sound perfect), and it gets plenty of mental and physical exercise, I think an adult BC would be fine being left for 6 hours. Don't leave a puppy alone that long.
My BC is left for 5-6 hours and he seems fine with it, he just sleeps while I'm not there or plays with his toys (he has a lot of toys). Give it a long walk and a run around before you leave, and it will likely just sleep while you're gone.

@wolfalord ME TOO! :P One dayy

@ecsgrl before getting bored. try training sessions of a max of ten minutes a day or so.

@ecsgrl Your dog is a mix of two very active breeds. Aussie's and Collies were bred to work, and therefore are generally not the breed for someone of a laidback lifestyle. All dogs may tone down their puppiness at around 3 years old, but an active dog is an active dog and if your girl is hyper, she always will be until very late in her life (her last few years) Maybe try classes to correct her wild behavior and remember that when training, dogs will only focus for a few minutes at a time

@Greighdee A border would be excellent at agility and flyball, they are the kings and queens of the game ;) but it does seem you are gone quite a bit and most (however not all) borders are usually spilling energy that can't be burned just running around the house with their friends. Unless you find a border of average energy, it's sort of your call. However I will warn you that any active dog that isnt given the challenge and excersise it wants and needs, will no doubt develop behavioural issues

@Greighdee Border Collies are bred for farm work and therefor always need a job to do. Border Collies do not do well in apartments and I would not recommend it either but, if they do then they need at least 2 hours of exercise. This exercise must work them physically and mentally. Border Collies form strong bonds with their owners and you need to interact with the dog as much as possible. I would not recommend a Border Collie for your situation. (Described average BC but always exceptions.)

Have you ever owned a collie or aussie before? Have you trained a dog before? If you haven't I would suggest getting some help in training. I just adopted an 8 week old Collie/Aussie mix her name is Luna. I take her hiking all over my back yard for about 1 hour 1/2 each day ( with my other two dogs - A Collie mix, and a Golden) they need not only exersise but mental stimulation too. I would suggest agility - Something that will work not only her body but her mind. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

We have a 2 mo. old border collie/aussie, she looks more like her mom (the Aussie), I've never had a dog like her before and I'm wondering if the energy is normal or we're doing something wrong. We exercise her and play with her everyday as much as it is possible. But we're having trouble keeping up with her and having her listen to us sometimes when we try to train her...is this behavior going to go away when she's alittle older?
