Baron's Orthopedic Surgery and Physical Rehabilitation at UC Davis VMTH
Petchitecture 16 Pet Idol, Baron, was recently diagnosed with a torn cranial cruciate ligament and medial meniscus of his right knee. Surgery was successfully performed and Baron has since been partaking in physical rehabilitation to continue his successful recovery.
This video shows Baron water walking in the underwater treadmill where he is at most 50% weight bearing. The hydrostatic pressure assists in the management of post-operative swelling. The buoyancy reduces the loading through painful joints and healing soft tissue structures. The support of the water promotes a more normal weight distribution between the front and rear limbs. Cardiovascular fitness and endurance are also improved.
Water walking as opposed to swimming will promote more extension of the limbs and proves to be more activity specific -- the dogs will have stronger muscles specifically for walking on land.
