Actually technically it's more like abduction, inference to the best explanation. From the premise that a given hypothesis provides a better explanation for the evidence than any other hypothesis, you conclude that the hypothesis is true.

. . . and the quick wits (I do not number modesty among the virtues). Therefore, despite stray considerations to the contrary I deduce that I will never leave the house with an unbrushed hat, and I will entertain said notion as a working hypothesis.

My girlfriend's tastes tend exclusively toward the living. This I have ascertained via careful observation of her habits. And, since the brilliant Mr. Brett no longer fits within this category, it would seem highly dubious that she would dump me for him. Consider also that, while I lack a few of these items, I do possess more of them than any other who's company she keeps, and this possession includes the hat, the cane . . .
