@svetaswan I meant that her grandfather was half African American, and half Caucasian/German.

@svetaswan Dawes' paternal grandmother was full-blooded Native American and her paternal grandfather was half African American and German. So on her dad's side as far as her grandfather goes her lineage may trace back to Germany or Poland depending on where they migrated. But, for the most part her family roots run well through America. But I think it's funny how Dom is African American, Caucasian/German, and Native American and yet all 3 of her names are French: Dominique Margaux Dawes. lol.

Kelly Hill* Not Kerry Hill...

@svetaswan Yeah, sometimes when you look at videos of her, her eyes are very Asian-like. Especially if you type in 95 US championships floor ef. There is an interview with Dominique right after she won the gold and her eyes look very squinted. lol.

She does not sound like a 17 year old. She sounds like she's about 12. lol. I guess this was what she was talking about when she said that she had a squeaky voice and people would make fun of it.

Thanks for uploading this (and other gymnastics fluff pieces). It's a fun, nostalgic trip down memory lane!

I'm often interested in the heritage of people, too - & like you, my queries have been met with resistance. Many people do treat it like a "taboo" topic, & get rather defensive & uncomfortable. One reason may be that people assume that such information will be used to separate people or discriminate against people. People act like heritage is not a legitimate thing to be interested in. Other reasons for resistance may be deeper...a little too "complicated" to elaborate on here.

Interestingly, Dawes' American roots probably run deeper than even people like Alicia Sacramone or Chellsie Memmel. Most of Dawes ancestors have been here in America for at least 350 years - whereas Sacramone's or Memmel's family tree probably contains more recent immigrants from Italy (Sacramone), Germany (Memmel), & other places in Europe.
-
(contd.) Dawes' parents were born in America, & I'm assuming that at least most of her grandparents were born in America. For at least most of her family tree, Dawes' American roots run deep. If you go back in Dawes family tree, you'll probably find that the vast majority of her ancestors were either slaves from Africa or Native American Indians.
So Dawes' American roots run much deeper than someone like Ivana Hong - whose parents (?) come from Asia.
I love the aussie commentator

I think Dawes is glad that she went to the '96 games.
