ACT V
~ Ballets
~ Qu'as-tu donc? ... Ne la vois-tu pas?

It is Walpurgis NIght and a diabolic ballet ensues. Faust is subjected to visions, the last of which is of Marguerite in prison for the murder of their child and awaiting execution.

Faust is a grand opera in five acts by Charles Gounod to a French libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré from Carré's play Faust et Marguerite, in turn loosely based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Faust, Part 1.
It debuted at the Théâtre Lyrique (Théâtre-Historique, Opèra-National, Boulevard du Temple) in Paris on March 19, 1859.

Gounod's Faust is the story of a scholar who sells his soul to the Devil in exchange for unlimited knowledge and worldly indulgences. McVicar's innovative production sets this story around the time of the Franco-Prussian War (1870) in the gothic, seamy underbelly of Paris. He characterizes Faust, performed by Roberto Alagna, as a man both torn between the theater and religion, and grappling with his own sexuality.

  • Absolutely PERFECT!!!!!!!

  • This has to be one of the most-unusual ballet sequences I have ever seen...but still very good.

On another note: do ALL of David McVicar's productions include people having sex on stage? I mean, I saw his Rigoletto....

see all
