White Tiger

The white tiger can measure up to almost 3.3 meters (11 feet) in length and can weigh up to 320 kg (700 lbs). Its hair lies flatter than that of the Siberian tiger. White tigers are not albinos. They have blue eyes and pink noses.

White tigers are found in Southwestern Asia and in India, in swampy or grassy areas and forests. The white tiger is a color variation, not a sub-species. There have been reports of a "blue" or slate-colored tiger and of black tigers.

White tigers are Bengal tigers that have an unusual gene, which is necessary for their white coloring. The white tiger is a poor climber, but good swimmer. They are solitary and hunt chiefly at night. They are highly endangered and only around 6000 live in the wild. More are captive than wild. Tigers belong to the Felindae (cat) family. They are top predators, have huge teeth with strong jaws, and are the largest of all feline species, including the lion. They can leap as high as 16 ft. and as far as 33 ft. Females rear the young alone and the young leave her when they are about 3 years old. After they leave, the female young establish territories near the mother, while the males wander in search of a territory.

The White Tiger is one of four symbols of the Chinese constellations. It represents the autumn season and the west. Some call it the king of all beasts. According to legend, when a tiger became 500 years old, its tail would turn white. It then became a mythological animal. It would appear only when the emperor ruled with absolute virtue.

A Siberian tiger was in the news at the end of December, 2007, at a San Francisco zoo.

A liter of 5 white tigers was recently born in Chile 09.12.28 (CD 10.01.09 A6 Litter of five white tigers born). Only around 200 such tigers exist.

@baskgod White tigers can't survive in the wild, because the white fur completely ruins the natural camo tigers have. It's sad but the only real way they can live is in captivity.
