I moved to medford oregon in 1969 , and I think I was the only one who could pick him up on the radio before around 8 p.m. when "SKIP" started rolling . My car radio had a BIG 102 inch stainless steel whip antenna on it hooked to the radio and LOTS of people would flock around my "59" ford fairlane and we'd all just cruise with the wolf Lotsa happy times on the radio CHEERS !!!!

Most of the Mexican "border blaster" stations were broadcasting with 2 to 10 times the US limit of 50,000 watts, but Wikipedia lists XERB's successor XEPRS as 50,000 watts. Even with the directional tower array that these stations used, from Baja to Oregon on 50,000 watts was no small feat!

Wolfman Jack was born in New York City but had to go to Mexico to get his big break in radio. The transmitter there in 1963 was 250,000 watts and reached around the country. How great that he got back to work on NY radio before he died in 1995. Read his great autobiography "Have Mercy!". He had quite a life. I listened to him in the 70's and 80's and saw him in person once. I'm sorry he died so young.

Wolfman Jack was the best American DJ ever. Everybody thought he was Black until he appeared in the movie American Graffiti in 1973. I remember listening to his show on the 50,000 watt, Mexican station XERB while cruising Main St. in Medford, Oregon, August 1969 along with my brother and two high school girls. Hollywood needs to make a movie on the life of Wolfman. R.I.P. Bob Smith (Alias: Wolfman Jack)
