Description

Old fashioned Japanese folding fan (sensu). This oversize fan was likely once used as an actor's prop for Kabuki theatre. The fan includes its original storage box which has Japanese writing on the lid which identifies the fan as a Kabuki sensu. Additional Japanese writing is found on the tines of the fan which includes a woman's name "Kojima Fusa". This wonderful large old theatre fan is made of thin bamboo tines covered with Japanese paper. The fan is in fair to good condition though the paper is a bit frayed at the edges with some wrinkles and wears a darkened patina of age. This fan is less than 40 years old and does not include a display stand.

Size:
Length when folded: 11.2 inches (28.7 centimeters)
Width across when open: 19.7 inches (50.5 centimeters)
Weight: 1.5 ounces (43 grams)

item code: R1S3-0005632
ship code: G3

  • Hi, I’m a student doing a research project about Japanese Kabuki Theatre and I saw the video you posted on youtube. I was just wondering if you know a lot about the Kabuki culture and are willing to answer a couple short interview questions.

  • I'm trying to make my own sensu. Could you please give us the measures of the big one?

  • your girl is really cute :)showing off her fan

  • add two more dots and it will look like temari's fan from naruto :D

  • Yeah, right. Japanese dance use big sensu for practice. Use as item like, word practice note as Tenaraiko and hat or shade(Just in hand not ware) as Kikudukushi, etc...Kabuki is a mixed performing arts, I think. Dance is a just part of it. Chushingura is a real affair but name is different real one. It's like mass media in those days.

  • how much is the japanese flag fan

  • this large fan is used for when onnagata actors are dancing...they are usually spun and flipped...watch a few Bando Tamasaburo videos...
