This video captures the thoughts and emotions throughout the last day of business for Save On Meats, which Al Deslauriers opened on Vancouver's Hastings Street over 50 years ago in 1957. It became an institution, not only serving the local community with quality meats at affordable prices, but attracting loyal customers throughout the region.
It raises the question of whether we can find a way to bring back this valued and much loved shop under a new owner, and the broader question of the future for local, family-owned businesses in our communities.

  • Thanks for telling this story. It's important to record historical events such as this one. On a personal note, I'm really going to miss my weekly trip to Save On Meets.

  • Thanks for making this Video.

  • Best Wishes

  • That was so great. I really wish I had come down. So many familiar faces. It really speaks to the value of this place, as more than a butcher shop, but a place where relationships were created and community came together. Thank you for documenting this.
