"young american" was a fantastic album!!!!! (the picture is the live on dick cavett show in 1974 with a memorial interview of bowie "under a substance...) rhe "crazy " years of bowie with 3 great album "diamond dogs" , "young american" and "station to station" thanks for this version  clément the dreamer.....

if you listen carefully to the chorus it sounds very similar to the chorus and bridge in 'Stay' on the 'Station to Station' album. Have a listen and see what you think.

Yes, "Stay" is a rewrite of this. Just as "Fame" was a rewrite of the touring version of "Footstompin'". In the case of "Fame" Bowie was able to make an old song his own. In the case of "Stay" he was able to reclaim his own song. Ex-manager Tony DeFries held publishing rights to "John I'm Only Dancing". By stealing back his own song and calling it "Stay" , David was able to retain publishing rights to it, and the additional money that entailed..
