@MaxwellForce The sound you hear is the JFS (Jet Fuel Starter). This is a small turbine engine which is started with a hydraulic system. As soon as the JFS is spooled up it starts to drive the main engine till 20% rpm, then the pilot has to place his throttle to the "Idle" position so fuel will be ingnited in the main engine. Hope this helps a bit.

The engine never started. That was just the JFS running up. If the video was about 30 seconds long you would've heard engine start.
-
@izanti No it didn't it was just the JFS, they have to run the JFS for a minute on the PW-220s as compared to the GE-100/129s

this is a pratt, not a GE, you can tell by the higher pitch the motor makes, and also by how they run the JFS for a min.

Hey dude.
I found the video i was talking about. It is a small jet engine that starts up first and then the main engine starts up. Enjoy!!

@izanti Very Cool man:-)
But at this point in the video the main engine is running, you can clearly hear the distinctiv F16 engine sound. Do you have the entire video? i would like to see the whole ting, im sure there is a point where you can hear the main turbine start up. If it is hydrolic, the hydrilics must bee powered by the statrer turbine engine, i am sure of it. I cant find the video im talking about, im still looking for it on youtube:-)

I dont think it actually started. This is just the starter you hear. The main engine never got started in this video

@MaxwellForce Umm Im pretty sure it did dude. The starter is the clicking you hear in the first few seconds of the start sequence then the burner cans get ignited. What do you think is causing all the noise in the video???

@MaxwellForce Ill see your video and raise you this one.
/watch?v=ZSXqFe4Ngm4 This is the same aircraft and video just cut differently. How could the smoke system work if in fact the engine was not on? The engine has to be on for this to work. Also, from what I understand these things have a hydraulic startup system thats spins the first turbine which is what I think you are talking about but if this is the case why would the ingiters be sparking during start up

Why would they start up the engine after a possible FOD incident? I don't think it sucked up anything, cause running it with damaged blades risk making more damage. I tear apart and build the GE F110-100/129 engines for the 16 here in Misawa AB, Japan... seen a lot of bird strikes... not fun to deal with.

@USAFF16JOHNSON
Actually this is about 2 days after sucking up the seagull and having a flame out on final. They just finished installing a new engine and this is the first start.
