Disney's animatronics have always been puppeted. This is the first time Disney has produced a show which is totally autonomous.
I happened to develop the entire vision components of this show during my internship at the Walt Disney Imagineering during summer of 2009. To learn more about my work and background, please visit, http://web.media.mit.edu/~mehoque/

  • The story engine is pre-programmed. However, the inputs which drive the story engine are dependent on its interaction with its audience. That level of interaction is new and novel.

The robot is not doing face recognition here. It is processing facial affect (e.g., smile detection) of its audience. They are totally different problems.

  • @affectivehoque so is it being puppeteered live by a person back stage or dose it really have its own brain

  • @RossEStern: It is totally autonomous, as the title of the video suggests.

  • The Bird and the Robot.

  • This is Skynet waiting to happen

  • autonomatronics - when r they going to use it without human control? (some of them do like the trash can robot)

  • so he just moves on his own? No pre-program like the Pirates of the Carribbean? I can't wrap my mind around that, this would make him alive wouldn't it? If he can move, see, and talk without being told to do it, that sounds living to me.

  • That's really interesting. Great work!

  • So their sort of using the technology used for turtle talk, but applying it to AudioAnamotronics?

  • WOW!!!
