I think that the way Rene acts at the start can explain why he didn't know - he seemed to not hold Asia in very high regard

@kbundy023 well thats the point. they wanted to show that whites can be so ignorant to the culture to think a a chinese woman could be so submisive like the one in the opera. a lot of this is explained in the trial.

Ohhhhkaaay, there's a mix of Cantonese and Mandarin being spoken in this film. When Song's servant let Rene in, she spoke Cantonese! But the movie takes place in Beijing!
