Illuminated manuscripts were among the most precious objects produced in the Middle Ages and the early Renaissance, primarily in monasteries and courts. Society's rulers--emperors, kings, dukes, cardinals, and bishops--commissioned the most splendid manuscripts.

Can you imagine a medium that can record information that would last a thousand years! My laptop will be outdated in 2 years.

I am an art teacher and I used this video when I taught a unit on the art of the medieval time period. My students loved it, the video really helped them to understand the process of making an illuminated manuscript. Thank you gettymuseum!

very good video. One question. When someone was making the manuscripts how can they get the job making it? Do they need a certain degree for it?
