Ca does have a lot of walnut trees.Where I live I am almost surrounded by them everyone is planting them now good money in nuts I guess.

Oh, I have a question as well. I am not from the US and I wonder what you mean by 'gathering burls legally'. Do you need permission (from who?) to cut burls from fallen/dead or already felled trees? Or (which makes sense) from live healthy ones?

@Mueiwark To harvest burls Legally You must have the permission of the land owner or if you go on to USA public lands you need a permit. If you are stopped by a patrol officer and you do not have documentation... it is a Federal Offence.
I get my burls from land developers who are clearing land for homes and such.
