President Obama has made a controversial choice picking Chuck Hagel as defence secretary.

Observers say the president set himself up for a bruising Senate confirmation battle.

Republicans regard Hagel as a renegede for breaking with them over the Iraq war. But would any Republican senator go as far as to block him?

John Brennan for CIA director is also a controversial pick. Some in Congress might be unhappy with him, as political analyst Bill Schneider explains from Los Angeles.
