@FistofAmerica who's making themselves out to be the victims, now? The Catholic Church always supported the murderous "pistoleros"... the priests who were "butchered" presided over the butchering of workers at the hands of paid fascists for decades before the civil war. The priests supported monarchy and opposed republic form of government, not to mention the Catholic Church's attempt at self preservation over their moral duty to defend the Jews against Hitler's barbarities. Get over yourself

Thanks for posting this excellent video DjeseretMenace. When I was in Barcelona 4 years ago, I was fortunate to catch a special exhibit in their local history museum about Juan Negrin, the last president (or?) of Republican Spain. There were four rooms of posters from all sides of the civil war (POUM, the anarcho-syndicalists, Stalinist Marxists, Falange, Carlists....). I was in awe. Two days later I went to Guernica and the day after I saw Picasso's Geurnica at one of the museums in Madrid.

You reds try to make yourselves the victims, why don't you talk about the defenseless preists who were butchered by these filth? You commie bastards got what you deserved when you lost Spain.

@jumpnjza2 Have you read "the battle for Spain" by Anthony Beevor. It`s a fantastic definitive account of the war.The international brigade memorial trust has also got a good website.I`ve just watched a tremendous doc on utbe called " the spanish civil war-a prelude to tragedy" It`s on an account called georgeorwell.Theres loads of great docs on that channel.well worth a look.
best wishes!

I agree with you, the sectarian divisions created by the CPSU's policies were devastating. It's the arrogance a degenerated workers state has in knowing that they're the only source of support for the besieged republic. They feel they have license to dictate terms without having to negotiate. Fact is that the mass of workers supported the non-comintern workers parties (POUM, CNT). I agree with you on the NKVD.
-
@jumpnjza2 Regarding "land and freedom",it is written from a POUM perspective and as someone who is closer politically to a POUM point of view than the other leftist movements I can see the films point. The sense of betrayal felt by the POUM(and the anarchists of the CNT/FAI) at being crushed by other leftists must have been overwhelming! It would have been a nightmare balancing act though, combining revolutionary zeal with a regular army, something the bolsheviks faced in the Russian civil war!
-
@jumpnjza2 Yeah,it`s a complex issue, but on balance I`ve gotta agree that a regular army prevented a quicker fascist victory. The problem was that Stalins invaluable assistence came with the arrival of the NKVD.Whilst successful in rooting out fsacist sympathizers, they also turned on all leftist rivals, particularly anarchists and the POUM.The crackdown in Barcelona in particular had a devastating effect on worker revolutionary morale, one of the republics strongest weapons!
-
No worries. My only point was that the 'Land and Freedom' explanation of what happens isn't entirely correct. The anarchists and the POUM should have understood the benefits that come with a regular army. The Soviets had already shown the internal proletariat how to smash the reactionaries in the civil war and also how to deal with foreign interventionists! Not saying Stalin handled Soviet involvement well by any means, but the big bad Stalin theory is wrong, he had a point.

@jumpnjza2 I was replying to your post about Stalins help stopping the republicans getting their "asses handed to them" I fear I misinterpreted your comment as pro franco. For that I apologize. On the other hand I`ve gotta agree with your remark about the Priests getting killed by communists.the church in Spain were involved with the fascist forces before, during and after their bloody coup, handing out "God`s blessing" to the murderous falange and carlists. They got their just punishment as enemies
