The end was just wonderful - seeing these people escape to freedom ! What a wonderful moment ! I was in West Germany in 1989 to look for a job, only to return to the U.S. because of the refugees coming to the West made that impossible. But that's called the winds of change.

It's clearly remarkable the heroism of East Berlin citizens at the time to refrain from provoking the Border Police.

Heroism? When Gorbachov had behavoured as a amateur ,in Poland Communism was fallen und the border with Austria was a big hole?
What a myth about happens that often happen in other places with more people. Champions League finals, a lot of demonstration join more people at least once per month.
How many people were there? thousands? The big Demonstration joined at most 70000 people (according with the myth). Where were the rest of the 16 millions of citizens of the East Germany?

Legendly, when the wall was constructed they had to close all the sewerpipes going thru the border. So, they had to hire welders to do the job. First guys that got the position strangely disappeared during the work.
