This shows how a PID controller makes temperature surfing redundant. More info at the blog entry: http://coffeemachineman.wordpress.com/2008/09/03/rancilio-silvia-pid-temperat...

  • Isnt more than 100°C a little hot for the coffee?

And is that rly 140°C when you steam the milk?!

    I'm not sure I like that ;).

But your latte art is pretty cool.

  • @ronnysizematters The temperature is measured at the top of the boiler. The brew water at the group head will be around 10C cooler than this. 140C for steam is normal. To generate pressure, the water/vapour mix in the boiler needs to be hotter than 100C. The hotter it is, the better the steam pressure. One of the problems with a non PIDed Silvia is that the steam pressure suffers when the boiler is at the bottom of it's temperature cycle (around 120C).

  • Was it difficult to fit the PID

I've seen some that sit between the portafilter and the steamer

  • No it is pretty easy if you follow the instructions. The PID that is installed next to the steam wand is the Auber PID.
