A guitar amp can be miked using a ribbon microphone, which can be placed very close to the cone or further away in the room. Find ways to record different sound qualities from an amp with information from an independent recording engineer and producer in this free video on music recording.

Don't say"here's how ya do it" when ya don't show it!"

  • for engineers out there, why would you ever want to add 'ambiance' if your going to use computer software anyway?

  • @ctguy1955 You record into recording software.

  • Im a newb, so you will have to forgive me. I came here searching for WHY and HOW I would Mic a guitar. So if I plug my guitar into my Mesa Boogie TA15

and its running the sound through the MB 2 x 12 cabinet, and I place my Sterling Audio ST-51 in front of the cab.....what am I playing the Mic through? I have a Marshall MG30 and a Crate Acoustic amp that I could plug it into, but I just dont get it ??? I have a firestudio mobile I could record into, that would make sence then.. Thanks

  • Hi! I have a Shure PG48 and a SE Electronics X1, do you think any of them would me good for recording an guitaramplifier?

  • Get a better guitar

  • anyone know how to get rid of the feedback coming from the amp? the the filter on the ribbon mic get rid of it? tried using a regular mic and the feedback made me :(

  • mic of choice ! .... yeah if you're minted ... sm57 i'll think you will find is the standard for guitar cabs

  • @novanine9 Well, to test how delicate it is I would suggest hurling a brick or possibly a toolbox at it, just to see if it will break, if it withstands that maybe, and only maybe, it might withstand a loud amp.

  • I heard that Ribbons are very delicate....would a loud amp damage it?

    Thanks

  • You'll need to apply some phase correction when combining mics at different distances. About 1ms per 34 centimeters (1 ms per foot).
