This video is a book talk for THE ADVENTUROUS DEEDS OF DEADWOOD JONES by Helen Hemphill, a novel for middle school readers published by Front Street/Boyds Mills Press. Prometheus Jones is a fine hand with a horse and gun, and both prove useful as a cattle drive to Deadwood throws every twist and turn imaginable at the young cowpoke. DEADWOOD JONES revives1890s "half-dime" adventure novels inspired by the African American cowboy Nat Love.

  • Thanks. It's a golden retriever mix owned by a friend of mine. He was very patient with us...and got lots of treats! HH.

  • Thanks! It's surprising to me that, overall, middle school readers aren't familiar with the western genre. Maybe Goldie can get them reading!

  • that was so cute! what kind of dog is that?

  • Very cute!

  • This is sooooo cute! Great book for kids in middle school that don't know about gun-slinging, river-crossing, hard-scrabble cowboys who chase high adventure.
