If it was a projection then it would need multiple projections to make it appear 3d, and then you would need thousands of them to produce a seamless 3d effect, dont fall into the, "eveything in the sky is HAARP trap"

Ok, that defies reality, i never saw it from that angle. But if it was smoke, then why would the centre of te 'hole' be PITCH black? You would see the smoke on the inside of the funnel!
