If the oath is adopted by all schools offering MBAs, will that be OK?. The crisis was caused by ignorance?. If professionals like Doctors and soldiers can do it, what's wrong if potential business leaders do it?. Why not see it as a moral obligation and conscientious clarion for leadership accountability and integrity. By all means, go ahead and maximise the value for shareholders but don't do it on other's expense. Regard it as symbolic gesture to uphold the virtues of corporate governance.
Theo presents a stronger argument. An Oath is very ineffective at changing behavior. One of the guiding principles in economics is the people act in their own self-interest. If you want to change behavior in the corporate world you have to change the incentives. Currently the only incentive is to increase shareholder value that is how you are measured. If you can add value or punishment for not doing so; to creating a better society then you will see change.
