9 Year Old Fiddler - Mikayla Roach - Orange Blossom Special

9 year old fiddler Mikayla Roach playing the world famous fiddle tune The Orange Blossom Special. Here Mikayla is playing a custom made 5 string fiddle made especially for her by Chuck Jones of Vandalia, IL. Mikayla started playing violin when she was 6 and currently has a band that plays across the Midwest, but mostly in Illinois. She also plays lead for the house band at the Seminary School House in Central Illinois every Saturday night. Featured also in this video are two of her band members; Russ Rench on Mandolin and Bruce "Swamp" Wiess on guitar. As a side note, Swamp was a member of the band of Alison Krauss and played all lead guitar on her first album.

I seldom reply but I felt compelled o for this comment .. she never practices, she just sits down with her friends and plays. At her age and with her interests now that's not happening as much either. When she told me that she wanted to play violin I did it like any other interest my kids have; I supported and insisted that she meet or exceed her teachers practice expectations for one year .. after a year she stopped practicing but she never stopped playing with her friends.. its just natural.

The man that was Mikayla's inspiration told her a joke about this not long after she started playing .. she actually used it a few times in performances it goes like this .. "Do you know the difference between a Violin Player and a Fiddler? ... THE NUMBER OF TEETH" .. When she used the joke in front of anyone she would smile real big because her baby teeth were falling out .. meaning she was a fiddler :)

Someone once told Mikayla .. the difference between a violin and a fiddle is that a violin has strings and a fiddle has straaannngggssssss ... pronounced with a drawn out strong southern accent straight from the Appalachian Mountains where bluegrass music originated :) Basically this means that the violin and fiddle are the exact same instrument, it's the way you play it that defines the difference between a violin and fiddle (:

Girl, you're better than me. Just please, improvise as much as you can. This song is a fun song, and you should do all sorts of weird stuff with it. I recommend listening to Vernon Derrick's version, Roy Clark's version and Michael McCanless' version.
