Domestic Rat - Mammary Tumor Removal

In this video, Dr. Michael Ramieri of Vernon Veterinary Clinic in Vernon, New Jersey discusses mammary fibroadenoma in the domestic rat using a middle-aged female rat named Sugar as an example. Sugar had a large mammary fibroadenoma on her ventral thorax that was beginning to hinder her ability to get around and was starting to affect her quality of life. This video illustrates that though benign in nature, these tumors can lead to major problems for the individual but can be delt with effectively and relatively easily by a veterinarian. Pre-operative video followed by post-operative results are presented.

My pet rat, Rat Rat, (Yeah I know. His name is so creative) had tumors, but my dad said it was too much money and that when he dies, we can just get a new one.

Rat Rat was taken to get put down today, and no one, can ever, replace her. She was so much more than a rat, she was a best friend.

Do NOT use red cedar for rats, pine is not good either. The cheapest thing that works for rats is Aspen shavings. If you can spend a little more, buy the Carefresh bedding (the stuff that looks like fluffy cardboard lol, sometimes can be found dyed in colors like pink and blue too).

I wish this vet was closer to my area! I have a female rat who has developed a tumor like this. We took her to a local vet, but they dont have much experience with rodents. They ended up doing nothing for her, now Im trying to find a good small animal vet who can help her.

@RandomPepsiCan Thats about the exact same thing here, she (my rat) has a tumor about 1 1/2 inches big D-;  And another one popped up a few weeks ago. My dad sais that its not worth spending so much money on an animal that only lives for 2 years );
