Ok, I don't think he is saying the virus was created in a lab. There were already swine flu cases when this went on the air. So, doctors already had infected blood samples, etc. It is a new virus, so they didn't know what they were dealing with. They likely isolated and grew the virus in a lab, so they would have enough of the virus to work with for testing, etc. I think that's what he meant. You can't see and identify viral cells with a microscope. They're too small. You test for them.

Sorry, I misunderstood your statement. What your saying is very true, no one can just up and make a new type of virus. It has to be made from another virus, and even then, it's going to be similar to the first one.

Some vaccines are made from parts of the protein coat. Some are made from attenuated (not virulent) organisms. The attenuated organism generates an immune response. I know how vaccines are made. The point is that is because the man said that the virus was cultured in a lab. He did not make some sort of slip and say they created the virus.

Yes you can. Viruses are not cells. They are a protein shell that is filled with DNA or RNA. They don't fabricate viruses with a simple means of chemistry, but make them simply by taking a very similar virus and changing the DNA slightly to make them a different one. How do you think vaccines are made no days? They take a very dangerous virus and fabricate a similar one so your body can develop an immunity to that strain and similar strains like it.
