This is the first day that Earnest will actually pull something that will drag on the ground. First Rick will hold it and drag it, getting Earnest used to the noise. And Rick holds it on a string so that he would be able to pick it up if Earnest had a fright. It is quite a feat to get a horse used to chains and things dragging so close to their legs, as the instinctive reaction is to kick and run away from it all.
