Shepard tone scale ftw! (reminds me of Super Mario 64 Endless Staircase)

Sadly, probably so. For some pieces with big bombastic endings that's acceptible, but others require some space. I'd say the safest indicator is when the pianist lifts his/her hands from the keyboard, or the conductor lowers his/her hands, or the instrumentalist puts his/her instrument in the "rest" position, is when the piece is officially over.

But of course if the performer traveled back to the year 1900 and performed the Ligeti piece then Ligeti couldn't have written it sixty years later, which means the performer couldn't have traveled back to 1900 ....

Actually in 1900 they would have likely hissed us off stage during the performance because it would have been so radical a composition back then haha. But concert etiquette as changed significantly for sure. For instance, in Mozart's day, if the audience liked one particular movement of a multi-movement composition, they might applaud at the end to hear it again! That'd be unheard of now, I imagine.

You're right at all! As you know, people in the world actually become dumber than before like some studies said. Our IQ become lower every generation! If you and I learned this and performed this in 1900, I'm sure there will be a lot an educated audience and they will respect or even like this music :)

I'm afraid if I learned this and performed this at my school then the uneducated audience would start clapping right when the last chord was struck and before it fully died down.
