Wood ducks, affectionately called "woodies", are one of the smallest and most beautiful of all North American ducks.
Male wood ducks sport a rainbow of colors and a handsome, crested head. Females are a drab brown, which conceals them as they tend to flightless ducklings.
Unlike most ducks, wood ducks are at home in the trees. They not only perch in trees, but they nest in hollow tree cavities.
Man-made nesting boxes provide excellent housing since they can be mounted on trees or poles directly over water.
