"Alaska Prudhoe Bay Highway" is the 5th in my self produced multi episode "Burro Has Three Wheels" series, driving the roads of North, Central and South America on the Pan American Highway otherwise known as Autopista Panamericana or La Carretera Panamericana.
Finishing the ride from Portland, Oregon to Tierra del Fuego in 2006, the first four episodes in my adventure rider DVDs (Mexico, Central America, Colombia / Ecuador & Peru, Chile, Argentina taking me as far south in the world as one could drive) were produced and simply titled "Burro Has Three Wheels". In June of 2007, I set out to finish riding my top to the bottom ride of the world, a road trip that would take me to Deadhorse / Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, as far north in the world as one can drive.
"Alaska Prudhoe Bay Highway" provides viewers a preview to a journey through the northwestern portions of Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, Yukon Territory and Alaska. This time I am not traveling alone. My old friend Tom and his companion Linda have asked to accompany me. They're riding two up on a KLR 650, I'm riding a 2005 Ural.
Highways include; US 101 on the Washington Coast, Canada Hwy 1 on Vancouver Island, BC from Victoria, BC to Port Hardy, BC, The Inland Passage along the BC coast, Canada Hwy 16 from Prince Rupert, BC to Kitwanga, BC, Canada Hwy 37 (Stewart-Cassiar) to the junction of Canada Hwy 1 near Watson Lake, YT, Canada Hwy 1 (Alaska Hwy) to the US border, US Hwy 2 to Fairbanks, AK and finally AK Hwy 11 (Dalton Hwy-The Haul Road) to Deadhorse / Prudhoe Bay, AK.
This movie documents the reality of three riders traveling together and what they experience. Sit back and enjoy an adventure of a lifetime that includes: weather, road conditions, local people and the terrific music found in the Pacific Northwest. I hope you get as many smiles watching this film as I did making the journey.
Reaching Deadhorse / Prudhoe Bay Alaska, I wasn't ready to head home just yet, the highway beckoned, and I couldn't ignore the siren's call.
So...Burro and I headed east to Goose Bay, Newfoundland / Labrador then on to Key West, Florida. These additional motorcycle travel documentaries comprise episodes 6 & 7. Future episodes are expected to document the entire tracing of the Americas as I ride the eastern coasts of Mexico, Central and South America. Gary Smith

Yes I did. I went from Portland Oregon in 2006 and then returned to Portland. In the summer of 2007 I left Portland for Prudhoe Bay. From Prudhoe of the same year it was off to Goosebay Newfoundland Labrador and then down to Key West, Fl. In 2009 I left Florida through the Gulf States, Mexico's Gulf Coast to the Belieze Border, up the Pacific Coast and Copper Canyon across the Northern Regions to Baja and down the Baja catching a Ferry to Mazatlan.

how much extra gas did you carry? im concerned about the trip from arctic circle to deadhorse and back. i hear there are no gas stations. thanks

I spent the night at Coldfoot and topped of the gas there as well. I had the Ural 2 1/2 gal jerry can plus an extra five gallon can. When I was in Deadhorse there was a gas station about 2 blocks away. It is not a stations like we have in the lower 48. There is just a pump house. You have to look for the person to pay if I remember correctly.

My Ural (Burro) is a 2005 Troyka. It was built as a road bike. I changed out the rear end and sidecar frame so that I could put a driveable sidecar wheel on it. I want to be able to run at highway speeds without the sidecar and run in the muck as well. I still have the standard street forks on Burro. I don't know if you can get a new Ural without the leading link front end. You'd have to ask a dealer. I suggest Raceway Services in Salem Oregon. They know my moto.

The KLR 650 is one of the best bikesfor adventure riders. 99% of the people in the world are good people. Even in reported dangerous places such as Mexicos Drug Triangle, I was lost for 2 days, everyone was great. They feed me, helped me find gas and my way out. Though Caracas may make you feel on guard, don't let the city distort your view about the rest of the world. We love Venezuela. It is on our top list. As always, don't drive at night because the roads are unfamiliar.
