Setting up and using a kotatsu

Every winter i get out the kotatsu (japanese heater table). I will show you what this is like and the problems its use can lead to!!!

A long time ago these tables were placed over a hole in the floor in which a heating source was situated. the blanket then held in the heat for those sitting around it.

These days they are made with a heating element on the underside of the table.

No it does not burn ur leg coz it has a soft fabric type coating on the cover. it doesnt even get hot to touch there.
Of course...kids sticking objects up in there would be a bad idea!

I have sat at an authentic kotatsu with coals underneath. A friend's traditional farmhouse in Kyushu had a dirt floor kitchen where she had to build a fire to cook a meal. They also had an authentic ofuro where you had to build a fire under it and then balance on a wooden platform inside the water and not touch the side of the hot metal cauldron while you soaked in it. They were back to the land people. Hard life.

okay, so i know you set up the "kotatsu" in the winter

does it have a different name in other seasons?

You made me miss kotatsu! Kotatsu is convenient place when boys and girls get together. You can hold hands or do something more with a next girl/boy without being known by the others. Japanese prefer SDA over PDA, you know?
