A big change from when I was hospitalized as a 4 year old in 1953, for a tonsillectomy as was pretty much a standard for most kids back then. I was in the "childrens ward" in which we kept in oversize metal cribs, with nets over the top to prevent climbing out. Since we could'nt get out to go to the toilet, they put diapers on us even on kids 8 years old! There was always a strong odor of disinfectant present, and the last thing I remember before surgery was the foul odor of anesthetic in a mask
