Vladimir Putin, the current Prime Minister of Russia, and former president who served two terms, has had a truly historic career. Accused of rigging elections and totalitarianism by the west, Russians loyalty to him, his reforms, stern personality and recent invasion of the former USSR state of Georgia, as well as his previous invasion of Chechnya make him a very interesting figure, so much so that TIME Magazine named him Man of the Year in 2007.

During his presidency, Russia's GDP increased from around 300 to $1300 Billion in USD, poverty rates were cut more than half, the middle class rose from 8 million to 55 million, and and average monthly salaries increased by 150% in real rates. Industry grew by 75%, investments by 125% and the economic crisis that Russia faced at the end of the Yeltsin years is now a thing of the past, as Putin has helped establish a thriving Russian economy based on the development of Russian energy and petroleum resources, as well as paying off the $200 billion in debt Russia faced.


Putin was nominated to be Prime minster by his successor Dimitri Medvedev. His own presidency was marked with extremely high approval ratings, never falling below 65% and peaking at around 81%, the highest of any world leader, no doubt due to the increase in the Russian standard of living. Putin's leadership also saw the nation through several military challenges, most notably the war in Chechnya and the 2002 hostage crisis in a Moscow theater and 2004 Beslan School hostage crisis in North Ossetia. Though Putin has had overwhelming support of the Russian populace, his regime has been plagued with problems of inflation and corruption, which he acknowledged in his interview with TIME magazine. Putin is also estimated to have substantial personal wealth, but the exact amount of which is unknown, esitmates range from the richest person in Russia to not even in the top 100 Duma candidates in his own party.
