Sorry for the short run, only place I could find. It's a 1997 BMW 540i with muffler/ silencer delete. Cut off the muffler/silencer, sounds even better in person. Also gained better throttle response, engine revs easier.

  • hey this sounds great flamewerks. Did you notice any torque decrease at the low RPMs after doing this? Also, did you remover the muffler/silencer only and leave the piping open or did you cap it after? Looking to go this route and would really appreciate your response. Some ppl mentioned a loss in torque which I'm concerned about as well...is this true??

  • @hovikp I didn't notice anything change, except throttle response was better after i cut it off. I just left it open after i cut it. Good luck

  • how much is it to get this done? i have the exact same car. i dont want it to be ricer loud but i i want it a little louder

  • @thewizardsleeve1 I just cut the rear muffler off with a sawzall, 10 minutes

  • Sounds awesome. My car will now sound like this tomorrow.

  • It sounds even better in person, you won't regret it!

  • Yeah, it's all preference. That should give you a little bit louder music, so if that's what you're looking for it should be perfect.

  • i was thinking of replacing the front resonator and welding a straight pipe. my friend just did it to his gti and the increase in volume was actually pretty nice

  • Another advantage to the method here is reversibility. If you don't like the sound (i.e. too loud), just have it welded back on (very simple, any shop or half decent DIY-er can do it in 15 minutes) and do something different.

This setup honestly isn't ricer loud. It's loud, but the big Y resonator does its job killing off the obnoxious noises and keeps it to this nice roar. Inside the car with windows and sunroof closed, it's difficult to tell the difference, especially at cruising speeds.

  • Which resonator? There are 2 resonators and a muffler. If you remove the front Y resonator, you'll have to weld in a straight pipe and it won't be much louder. If you remove just the rear resonator, you'll have to cap the 3" pipe since that resonator is run in parallel with the muffler. There still won't be much sound gain. To get a real volume increase instead of a tone difference, you'll have to do what Flamewerkz and I did, or cut the Y-res out and replace both rear cans with a muffler.

  • im thinking about just taking the resonator off... i dont want to just hack away at my car

  • Don't try it with a handsaw... the exhaust is made from kryptonite.
