the earth is actually a supercomputer which was made to calculate the ultimate question, but since that would make the job of psychaitrists pointless, they banded together with the vogons to blow it up 5 minutes before it was done computing.

no.. the.. true reason does not become clear for sometime, near the end of the series/books. the hyperspace bypass is just the an excuse...

No, it was destroyed to make way for a Hyperspace Bypass... (a side-road, of sorts, for space travelers.)
