This video is the seventh in my Minecraft Morning Musings series, in which I sail eastward while talking about philosophy. I'm starting with the Dao de Jing (Tao te Ching). You can find public domain copies all over the internet, but in this video is specifically reference the public domain translation by James Legge.

  • joe please stop doing these videos...

its kinda obv that ur not getting alot of views unlike your other vids.

  • @sexyass02 I don't need the same number of views on everything I do. Some projects help me stretch creatively.

As you liked my older work, have no fear—in the next few weeks, I plan to augment uploads of this morning series with adventure maps in the afternoon/evening.

    Re liked :D

  • I have been thoroughly enjoying these videos! Thank you Joe, for taking things to a different level. Philosophy is in fact an important part of human life and history, and I enjoy your branch into it.

  • thanks Joe for adding variety to my YouTube feed!

  • I usually love your videos joe ;) but i am not that into philosophy and such...

  • Joe, you beat me to the War Games reference. XD

I find Leg...ge's translation to be interesting. It reminds me of the Wu Wei part, in that it also seems to be describing a good leader as one who does not go too far. It sounds like he's saying a strong leader is one who does not fight, does not oppress people, or who doesn't even need to compel his people to act in his name. He bends wills, not actions, and people choose to follow (unite with) him.

But McDonald's translation sure is different!

  • hey joe, how do i use wu wei to get commercials out of my head?

  • Joe, this words speak wisdom.....I'm gonna go play Minecraft now.

  • Jesus, it's early.
